This product provides bioactive forms of vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin B6 for highest bioavailability of these important B vitamins.
- Provides vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin: Vitamin B12 is crucial to the formation of healthy red blood cells, energy production, nervous system support, cognitive function, and homocysteine regulation. Although cyanocobalamin is the most commonly used form of vitamin B12 in dietary supplements, it must be converted by enzymes into an active coenzyme form to be useful. Nutritional inadequacies, enzyme defects, and tissue abnormalities can reduce the body’s ability to synthesize the active forms of B12. In contrast, vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin is a “body-ready” form with metabolic benefits that may not be provided by other forms of vitamin B12. It appears that methylcobalamin may be particularly useful for individuals with impaired methylation capacity, including those with elevated homocysteine or neurological impairments.
Supplies an active form of folate: This B-vitamin is crucial for generating red blood cells, regulating homocysteine metabolism, assisting DNA repair, and supporting neurological processes. Metafolin®* L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF), an active form of folate, is included in this product to help ensure more immediate effects on metabolism compared to folic acid, the form of folate commonly used in fortified foods and supplements.
Contains the active, coenzyme form of B6: Vitamin B6 is necessary for many aspects of health including protein and amino acid metabolism, red blood cell formation, normal brain function, and synthesis of antibodies important for optimal immune responses. Pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (P-5-P) is a body-ready form with metabolic benefits that may not be provided by other forms of vitamin B6. Although pyridoxine hydrochloride is the most commonly used form of vitamin B6 in dietary supplements, it must be converted to the active coenzyme form, P-5-P , to be useful. Nutritional inadequacies, certain medications, compromised liver function, and enzyme defects can reduce the body’s ability to convert B6 forms such as pyridoxine hydrochloride to P-5-P . In contrast, vitamin B6 as P-5-P is already fully “active” and readily usable, as it does not require further transformation in the body.
Individuals most at increased risk for vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin B6 deficiencies are the elderly, vegetarians, and individuals with ulcers, Crohn’s disease, and bacterial overgrowth. This dietary supplement may be especially beneficial for persons with impaired gastrointestinal absorptive function due to aging, illness, or surgery.
