Tobac PAK DetailsNicotine achieves its initial effects by disrupting
the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Like other neurotransmitters,
acetylcholine has several different subtypes of receptor with which
it can combine. One group, called nicotine receptors, can also be
occupied by nicotine molecules. Unlike those of most other substances,
however, nicotine's effects quickly spread to each of the four major
neurotransmitters I've discussed. In other words, nicotine also disrupts
serotonin, endorphins and enkephalins, dopamine, and GABA. To complicate
matters further, nicotine's effects can vary dramatically from one
person to the next. Many people use tobacco because it helps them
concentrate and stay alert, while others use it to relax. Because
it stimulates both inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters, nicotine
is capable of both energizing and relaxing.
